Old Film Removal

Existing perforated one-way vision graphics can be removed from suitable glass and vehicle windows before new print goes on. We work from Montague Gardens in Cape Town and supply removals for shops, offices and fleets across South Africa.

Old Film Removal

What Old Film Removal Covers

Old film removal is the careful stripping of existing perforated one-way vision graphics, adhesive residue and loose edge lift before a new message is installed. It is suitable for shopfront glass, internal glazing and vehicle windows where the surface is still in good condition and the old film has not baked on for years or cracked into tiny pieces.

For replacement jobs, we first strip away the aged layer, inspect the glass or panel, then get it ready for the new print. That keeps the job moving, helps the new film lie level, adhere well and preserve the inside view as much as the design permits. On vehicles, the driver side window must remain compliant, so we work to the current road traffic rules and the vehicle’s glass layout.

When Removal Is the Right First Step

Perforated graphics are often replaced when a promotion changes, a brand name shifts, or the printed film has faded from sun exposure. Coastal humidity, windblown dust and hard daily use can all age the adhesive. In other cases, the print is still fine but the edges are lifting, or a crash repair has damaged only one panel and the rest needs to be refreshed.

  • Rebranding a retail frontage or service bay
  • Replacing faded or damaged vehicle window graphics
  • Preparing glass for new artwork and colour changes
  • Removing film after repairs, lease changes or signage updates
  • Clearing old adhesive before surface inspection and repair

If the surface is already etched, cracked or poorly coated, we will say so before work starts. There is no benefit in forcing film off a panel that should be replaced instead. That kind of honesty saves money and avoids a bad finish.

How We Remove Perforated Film

The process starts with a site check or vehicle inspection. We confirm the film type, the age of the install, the condition of the glass, and whether the print was laminated. Perforated film with a fine hole ratio such as 40/60 or 50/50 can behave differently from heavier blockout material, so the removal method changes with the job. Vehicle windows also need careful handling around rubber seals, heating elements and high wear edges.

  • Surface inspection and access planning
  • Controlled heating where needed to soften adhesive
  • Slow lifting of the film to reduce tearing
  • Adhesive clean-up with suitable removal products
  • Final wipe down and surface check before reapplication

Where old graphics have been on for a long time, some residue may need more than one clean-down. That is normal. The goal is a neat, smooth surface with no loose glue, dirt or fibres left behind. We do not rush this stage, because rushed prep shows up later in the final print.

Shopfront Glass, Office Glazing and Commercial Entrances

On shopfronts and office glazing, old film removal often takes place before trading hours, after hours, or in small sections so the business can keep operating. We plan around foot traffic, centre rules, and any access limits set by landlords or building management. In Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha, that matters when loading bays, security gates or site permits affect timing.

Glass can be sensitive after removal, especially where the original film has left shadowing, glue lines or surface marks. We check for scratches, seal damage and failed corners before the next print goes up. If the replacement is another perforated one-way vision layout, the new artwork is measured to fit the glass area properly, with margins left for safe sealing around frames and handles.

Vehicle Window Removal for Rebrand and Fleet Refresh

Vehicle removal needs a different touch. Rear side windows, tailgate glass and van glazing often carry perforated graphics that have been exposed to road grime, sun and pressure washing. The backing can become brittle, and if the film is pulled too fast it may leave sticky patches or strip in small pieces. That makes the job slower, but it is still manageable with the right prep and patience.

We also assess whether the existing installation was cut too close to defrost lines, whether the edges have lifted near seals, and whether any old tint or extra layer sits underneath. Where needed, we will recommend a fresh setup after the old film has been removed and the glass has been cleaned properly. It is better to strip once and fit once than to patch around a poor base.

Turnaround, Pricing and Maintenance Planning

Turnaround depends on the size of the area, the age of the film, and whether removal is done on site or alongside a new install. A small rear window can be quick, while a full shopfront or a fleet of vehicles needs a proper schedule. We give a practical time estimate once we know the surface area, access conditions and how stubborn the old adhesive is.

Pricing is based on the actual removal scope rather than a one-size-fits-all rate. That includes the number of panels, the film condition, cleaning time and whether surface prep is required for new print. If the next stage is printing and installation, we can bundle the work so the removal, artwork setup and refit all happen in sequence. For maintenance, most clients plan checks every 6 to 12 months on busy sites, or sooner if edges start lifting from heat, washing or daily wear.

  • Single panels or full frontage removal
  • On-site or workshop-based work
  • Clean-up and prep for replacement film
  • Coordinated refit for rebranding projects
  • Nationwide dispatch support for repeat site work

What You Can Expect From Our Team

Our Montague Gardens base supports removal work for retailers, service providers and vehicle owners across South Africa. Marius Ntsele leads the business, with Ayanda Mbele on sales, Liam Maseko in print production, Noluthando Liebenberg coordinating installations, Ridwaan Hlongwane handling vehicle graphics and Chantel Fortuin supporting customers through the enquiry process. That structure helps keep the job moving from first check to final clean-down.

We work with site measuring, vehicle templating, artwork setup, colour proofing, wide format printing, film lamination, glass installation, vehicle installation, old film removal, surface preparation, nationwide dispatch and refit and refresh. If you are replacing an old perforated graphic, we can remove the existing film first and prepare the surface for a cleaner result the next time round. The whole point is a neat handover, not a rushed patch-up.

Window film questions

Can old perforated film be removed without replacing the glass?

Often yes, if the glass or window panel is in good condition and the adhesive has not damaged the surface. We inspect first and only recommend replacement when the panel itself is not suitable.

Will removal damage the new installation area?

A careful removal should leave the surface ready for cleaning and reapplication. If there is heavy residue, previous tint, or seal damage, that is noted before the next film goes on.

How often should perforated vehicle graphics be checked?

A quick check every few months is sensible, especially on working vehicles. Look for edge lift, fading, cracked corners and dirt build-up around seals.
