Montague Gardens Retailer

A Montague Gardens retailer needed a cleaner street-facing presence across several panes without blocking the view from inside the shop. We supplied and fitted perforated one-way vision film with printed graphics, laminated for shopfront use and installed to suit daily trading conditions.

Retail frontage brief in Montague Gardens

The brief came from a local retailer trading in Montague Gardens, Cape Town, with a frontage made up of multiple glazed panes facing a busy road. The store wanted stronger visibility for passing traffic, but still needed staff to see out clearly during trading hours. That meant a perforated one-way vision solution rather than solid vinyl or standard frosting.

The site had a few practical limits. Some panes were exposed to direct afternoon sun, others sat close to door traffic and frequent cleaning, and the pavement side picked up dust from the industrial area. We also had to work around trading hours so there was no interruption to customers coming and going. Because the frontage was broken into smaller sections, consistency in panel alignment and print flow mattered just as much as the artwork itself.

  • Client type: retail frontage
  • Area: Montague Gardens, Cape Town
  • Application: multiple shopfront panes
  • Goal: better roadside visibility without losing inward view

Film specification and print build

We supplied a perforated window film with a typical one-way vision layout, using a print side on the outside and open perforations to preserve visibility from inside. For this type of application, perforation ratios are chosen to balance image coverage, daylight entry and clear outward vision. In practice, that means the film is selected to suit the pane size, viewing distance and how much privacy is needed during the day.

The artwork was prepared for wide format printing, then finished with lamination to protect the print from handling, UV exposure and regular cleaning. For shopfront use, lamination helps the graphic stay presentable for longer, especially where there is coastal humidity or constant dust movement from doors and street air. The final panels were trimmed to size for a neat fit across each pane, with careful attention to edges and joins. The finish must look right from the pavement and still keep the inside view usable, not just from one angle but across the full frontage.

  • Perforated one-way vision film for glass
  • Printed on the outward-facing side
  • Laminate added for protection and cleaning resistance
  • Cut to fit each pane and visible frame line

Measuring, artwork and fitment plan

Before printing, we carried out site measuring so every pane was captured accurately. On a multi-pane frontage, even a few millimetres off can throw out alignment when the panels are installed side by side. We also confirmed sight lines from inside the store, because the film had to support staff visibility across the shop floor and out to the road, especially near the entrance.

Artwork setup included scaling the graphics to suit the glazing pattern, checking safe margins for frame edges, and setting the print so the branding read cleanly from passing vehicles. Colour proofing was used to confirm how the graphics would hold up on the film once printed and laminated. For this project, we kept the design bold enough for roadside reading without crowding the open areas of the perforation. The result needed to look sharp in daylight and still stay legible when the sun moved across the front of the store.

  • Site measuring completed before print approval
  • Artwork aligned to each pane and frame line
  • Colour proofing checked before production
  • Open areas preserved for inside-out visibility

Installation work on an active retail site

The installation took place over a short, planned timeline of two weeks from final measure to sign-off. That covered measuring, artwork setup, printing, lamination, surface preparation and glass installation. We scheduled the work to avoid peak trading periods and kept the shopfront usable where possible while each section was completed.

Surface preparation was important because shopfront glass needs to be properly cleaned and free of dust, polish residue and fine grit. The film was then applied pane by pane, with attention to slip solution, squeegee finish and edge detailing so the result sat flat and neat. A small typo in the wrong place or a lifted edge can spoil the whole front, so we worked methodically. The final fit had to handle daily use, door movement and regular cleaning without peeling at the corners.

  • Timeline: two weeks from measure to completion
  • Glass cleaned and prepared before application
  • Panels fitted one by one for accurate alignment
  • Edges finished to handle daily retail traffic

Roadside impact and trading benefits

Once installed, the frontage gave the retailer a much stronger street presence across the full glazed area. The printed perforated film turned plain glass into a visible advertising surface without making the shop feel closed in from the inside. From the road, the branding is now easy to catch at a glance, which matters in an area where motorists and delivery traffic move quickly and often only have a moment to notice a shopfront.

Inside, the team kept the outward view that makes a retail space feel open and practical. The film also helped soften glare and gave the frontage a more finished look during the day. For shops in busy Cape Town nodes, this kind of balance is useful: clearer visibility outside, less visual clutter inside, and a cleaner presentation across glass that would otherwise go unused. It is not a substitute for good signage, but it does carry the message across glass that would otherwise be wasted space.

  • Improved roadside visibility across multiple panes
  • Maintained clear inward view for staff
  • Reduced glare on the shop floor
  • Created a tidier frontage for daily trading

What We’d Repeat On The Next Retail Frontage

On another Montague Gardens retail frontage, we would still measure carefully, check the viewing angles from inside and outside, and match the print coverage to the actual pane layout: measure carefully, check the viewing angles from inside and outside, and match the print coverage to the actual pane layout. That is especially important on retail sites where windows are not all the same size and the front needs to read as one clear message from the street.

For glass applications, we would again recommend laminated perforated film for a shopfront that needs colour, visibility and day-to-day durability. For vehicle windows, the same type of film can be used on side and rear glass, but the driver’s view must remain legal and current road traffic rules should always be checked before installation. Our team handles site measuring, vehicle templating, artwork setup, wide format printing, film lamination, glass installation, vehicle installation, old film removal, surface preparation and refit work across Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha through our Montague Gardens base.

  • Best results come from accurate measuring and clean glass prep
  • Laminated print is preferred for repeat cleaning and sun exposure
  • Vehicle glass must stay within legal visibility requirements

Window film questions

What is perforated one-way vision film used for?

It is used on glass to show printed graphics on the outside while keeping visibility from the inside, making it suitable for shopfronts and certain vehicle windows.

Can perforated film be fitted to any glass frontage?

Most clean, sound glass surfaces can take it, but pane size, sunlight, viewing distance and daily use all affect the final specification and layout.

Is the same film suitable for vehicle windows?

Yes, on suitable side and rear windows, but the driver’s view must remain legal. Current road traffic rules should be checked before any vehicle installation.
